Arenal Spring Break Activities

1. Rappelling/ Canyonning :

Hiking Tour Departs at 3:30pm

Hike through lush rainforest near an active volcano accompanied by an experienced naturalist guide. Explore primary and secondary rainforest and the animals and plants that live there. On the trail is an observation point that offers the nearest possible observation point at the base of the volcano. After enjoying the sunset the view becomes even more awesome when on clear nights you can see the lava flow of Central America’s most-active volcano and if you’re lucky, you may be able to hear the eruption or the thuds as large lava rocks come tumbling down the side of the cone shaped volcano. The tour lasts one and a half; to two hours at an easy hike (there are some muddy sections and a little uphill.

5:30-6.00 pm Guided Walk Ends, Transfer to Hot Springs

For those who wish to continue enjoying the benefits of a highly volcanic setting the tour continues on to the Thermal Hot Springs of Baldi.

Get an outstanding view of Arenal Volcano by night.  Baldi Hot Springs is located in a beautiful location where you can sit and soak and enjoy tropical gardens and steamy nights. The Springs offer restaurants, swim-up bars, changing rooms and lockers, spa, massages, several different temperature hot springs, natural pools, waterfalls, and swimming pools.

Due to the difficulty of acquiring reservations at Tabacon Hot Springs we offer Baldi Hot Springs. If you desire to secure your own entrance to Tabacon we are happy to drop you off there after the hike.

Come join us for the hottest full day rafting trip in the country on the mighty Rio Toro. 2 ½ hours of non-stop white water action. This stretch of rapids offers 45 continuous class III – IV Rapids. The river canyon includes exotic wildlife and fauna. Tours depart from La Fortuna at 8:30am and return around 3.30 pm. Available almost every day of the year.

4. Venado Caves Tour

For those people that would not matter get wet and muddy, in this fascinating adventure under ground to only 45 minute from La Fortuna, we will take you through narrow passages and incredible labyrinths and chambers where we will see the famous formation of rock named “La Papaya,” and other stalactites and stalagmites that they surely will astonish to everybody. Also you will see spiders and bats which are frequent in this place.

5. Hanging Bridges

The Arenal Hanging Bridges tour takes place on a 600 acre reserve filled with lush vegetation and a variety of birds and animals which your experienced guide will help you spot. The trail itself is 1.9 miles (3.1 km) in length, crossing nine fixed bridges and 6 suspension bridges and is laid out at a maximum grade of 7 degrees so that anyone can walk it.

6. Horseback Riding to La Fortuna Waterfall

This is a good combination of horseback ride and hike and a beautiful stage. Those are trained horses that will take you until the entrance of the waterfall through pastures, forest and tall hills. The views of the Valley of San Carlos and the tropical forest that enclose it are spectacular.

At the end of the road, we will leave the horses and we will descend walking for a natural trail until the base of the waterfall.

This fantastic area is very quiet and special to relax and swimming for a while.

7. Hiking to Celeste River

We leave at 7:00 a.m. from La Fortuna. After a typical breakfast in route to Rio Celeste, we’ll arrive at the Tenorio Volcano National Park, were we’ll begin our 7 k.m hike (approximately 4 hours) through the tropical rain forest. We’ll arrive “Los Teñíderos” of the Rio Celeste, the site where two streams of crystalline water come together and form the heavenly color blue that gives the river its name. We’ll return through trails, rich with ecological wonders, that lead us to the “OLLAS” — openings in the earth where we can excavate healing mud, take a mud bath, and a dip in the natural hot springs all while observing the attractions of Tenorio Volcano.

We’ll continue our hike through the jungle to seek out the volcano’s furnace vents that expel gases of extreme high temperatures. On our decent we will get to see the spectacular Rio Celeste waterfall whose color makes it one of a kind. Our final reward is an exquisite lunch at the end of our journey.

8. Cerro Chato Hike

We begin the journey transferring us from La Fortuna around the Arenal Volcano to get to the hotel “Observatory Lodge,” there we start the hike toward the summit of Chato Hill through a very dense primary forest. When we arrived up we go to visit the lagoon on the top, where you can swim besides taking photos and discover the surroundings. Then, we continue descending, always enclosed of a very dense forest, where you could appreciate birds, plants, animals, insects and immense trees, as well enjoy the sensation of liberty having a beautiful views of the San Carlos Valley as well as of the Arenal Volcano. The end of the walk will be in La Fortuna Waterfall, where we will descend again in order to arrive on the dot base of it and enjoy a beautiful natural landscape that makes it very special. After a refreshing swim we will return to La Fortuna town by car.

9. Horse Back Riding to Monteverde

We leave from La Fortuna early in the morning to the Arenal Dam. A motorboat takes us to the other side of the Arenal Lake to El Castillo, a town where the horses will be ready for us. We ride for three and a half hours, crossing rivers, grasslands and forests. We will climb up over 3300 feet (1 km.) until we reach the cloud forest. This is probably the most spectacular trip you will find in Costa Rica – traveling by horseback on the old trade route used by locals for decades! On our horseback tour, traveling to or from Monteverde, you avoid some of the worst pothole filled roads in the country. In addition, it gives you the opportunity to see some of the most stunning scenery in the world as you ride nearby the Children’s Rainforest” Reserve and the Monteverde Cloud Forest! This is a remarkable adventure and you maximize your valuable travel time.

10. ATV 4 Wheeler Adventure

The Quads Adventure ATV tour not only gives you the opportunity for adventure and fun but also includes nature and unique views of the majestic Arenal Volcano (visibility permitting). The trail you will traverse goes through pastureland at the base of the volcano from which you will have numerous opportunities to view the volcano before eventually arriving at Lago de Los Lirios (Lilly Lake) which has the distinction of being the only lake in the area that contains sulfur residues from the volcano. From there you will continue on the trail passing through Tropical Humid Forest giving you the opportunity to observe the area’s flora and fauna before arriving at lookout point where we will have drinks and fruit for you. From this lookout point you will enjoy one of the best views of the volcano and some of its most recent flows as your expert naturalist guide tell you about the volcano’s history and characteristics. After two hours of combining adrenaline with nature you will return to where you started on the ATVs. Here you will get to see and learn about crocodiles, frogs and the area’s beautiful butterflies. 1. Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge on Canoe or Boat

The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is considered one of the richest sites in the continent for the observation of birds. Beside an abundance of birds, Caño Negro is also refuge of many other animals like: sloths, three types of monkeys, caimans, lizards, bats, and a variety of native flora of the wet land. Our tour to this beautiful region, leaves from La Fortuna, driving for about an hour and a half until Los Chiles, which is a rustic town that meets to only five kilometers of the border of Nicaragua, it is here where we take the boat down to Río Frío for about three hours. From the beginning of the trip, our professional guide will explain each one of the plantations that we will see on the way, as well as the flora and fauna of the region.

2. Combination Tour with Danaus Ecocenter

This tour begins at 8:00 a. m. and is a new alternative for visitors to see Fortuna area looking for a different natural experience; a combination create for lover nature. At Danaus Eco-Center, our first stop, you will enjoy and learn about the natural history of butterflies of Costa Rica, like Blue Morpho, Monarch, Owl butterfly, Swallow tail and many more. You will also see a great variety of tropical plants and traditional crops, organically farmed in the gardens. Our next stop is in La Fortuna Waterfall. This waterfall has a huge swimming hole with large rocks nearby, perfect for a rest after and invigorating swim. Then we drive back to town to have lunch at “Lava Rocks Restaurant.” About 3:00 p.m we start the tour to the volcano. We have a choice of natural trails to take which depend on which side the lava is flowing down. From any of them, you will see a great variety of plants, wildlife, the magnificence of Arenal formed lava rock and the surrounding forest. We walk up the lava flows and watch the sunset as we await darkness to see and hear the glowing rocks of lava tumbling down the side of the mountain. A sight not to be missed. A full active day! Now, put on your bathing suit again to relax in the thermal waters of Tabacón Resort for a few hours and have dinner there.
